• solo - is a very simple script (10 lines) that prevents a program from running more than one copy at a time. It is useful with cron to make sure that a job doesn't run before a previous one has finished
• teamocil - is a tool used to automatically create sessions, windows and splits in tmux with Ruby and YAML. Like tmuxinator, but with splits, not just windows.
• BoxCryptor - is a cryptographic virtual harddisk that encrypts all data on-the-fly using the AES-256 standard. Encrypted data is stored in an arbitrary directory of your choice, e.g. one that is synced to the cloud like your Dropbox folder.
• ColorPicker Pro - is an easy to use color detection tool for developers and designers.
• auto_torrent - Give it a list of stuff to look out for, set your bittorrent client’s ‘watch’ directory to match auto_torrent’s download directory, infringe copyright without lifting a finger.
• Supervisor - is a client/server system that allows its users to monitor and control a number of processes on UNIX-like operating systems.
• Jump - type j in a terminal, and enter your query at the prompt: results will be updated live as you type. Switch between suggestions with up and down arrow, select with enter and boom you’re in the right directory. Basically, all the fancy web 2.0 autosuggest mojo right in your terminal.
• Vigor - the popular Unix editor vi with the addition of the Vigor Assistant, has arrived.
• Conque - is a Vim plugin which allows you to run interactive programs, such as bash on linux or powershell.exe on Windows, inside a Vim buffer. In other words it is a terminal emulator which uses a Vim buffer to display the program output.

Das ist aber nun wirklich sehr schade…

Each version of iPhoto that is released requires us to rewrite the entire interface between Keyword Manager and iPhoto, due to the changes that Apple makes to the internal structure of the program. We’d like to stress that this is not unexpected nor in any way Apple’s fault. It is just the nature of writing a plug-in for a program without a supported plug-in architecture.

Die Jungs und Mädels von Bullstorm haben das Katz und Maus Spiel mit Apples undokumentierten iPhoto Schnittstellen aufgegeben und stellen ihren großartigen Keyword-Manager ein.

Mit diesem Stück Software habe ich seit Oktober 2007 meine Tags in iPhoto vergeben. Dank Autocompletion und fest im Muscle-Memory verankerten Hotkeys, war ich damit immer sehr schnell unterwegs. Dagegen kann ich es irgendwie nicht sehen, dass ich mit den Bordmitteln von iPhoto auf annähernd die gleiche Geschwindigkeit kommen werde…

Was also tun? Ich denke ich werde die Gelegenheit ergreifen und eine weitere Migration auf meine ToDo-Liste setzen. Aperture ist ja vor einiger Zeit deutlich im Preis reduziert worden. Wenn ich diesen Post hier gleich veröffentlicht habe, werde ich wohl dem MacAppStore einen Besuch abstatten und dann mal schauen, wie ich die Bilder aus iPhoto am besten in Aperture bekomme.

Und dann kann auch das Thema RAW-Fotografie mal etwas genauer beguckt werden…

Mit Cmd-F kann man in so gut wie jedem Programm eine Suche nach einem Suchbegriff durchführen. Das wissen nicht so richtig viele Amerikaner:

“90 percent of the US Internet population does not know that. This is on a sample size of thousands,” Russell said. “I do these field studies and I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve sat in somebody’s house as they’ve read through a long document trying to find the result they’re looking for. At the end I’ll say to them, ‘Let me show one little trick here,’ and very often people will say, ‘I can’t believe I’ve been wasting my life!’”

Ich glaube eigentlich nicht, dass das hierzulande groß anders ausschaut.

Eine kurze, wenig repräsentative Umfrage unter den Mitbewohnern förderte folgende Ergebnisse zutage:

• Die Ehefrau: Kennt die Funktion, wurde ihr mal von einer Arbeitskollegin in Excel gezeigt.
• Der Sohn: Kennt die Funktion bisher nicht, nimmt Computer und deren Unbillen eh noch nicht so ernst da man an ihnen nicht lecken darf.
• Die Katze: Kennt die Funktion vermutlich, schweigt aber beharrlich da jedes Ausplaudern in ihrer Geheimsekte mit schlimmen Dingen bestraft wird…

Meine Wenigkeit nutzt Suchfunktionen allerorten mit Inbrunst. Wenn ich in Vim in einer Datei die gesuchte Stelle sehe, aber nicht binnen Millisekunden erkennen kann, wie ich mit Bewegungskommandos da hin komme, wird sofort die Suchfunktion benutzt. Wir sparen hier jeden Tastenanschlag, irgendwie muss man ja das Vimgolf Handicap verbessern.

Daher hier als kostenlose Dienstleistung an der Menschheit: Benutzt Cmd-F oder, wenn ihr nicht auf einem Mac unterwegs seid, Ctrl-F, um Dinge in Dokumenten schnell zu finden. In 99 % aller Fälle ist das Suchen mit den Tasten schneller als das Suchen mit den Augen und dem Scrollwheel.

Dieses neue¹ MacBook Pro, und hier insbesondere der verbaute Intel Core i7 mit vier Kernen à 2 GHz, die dank HyperThreading auch noch jeweils einen virtuellen Kern für das Betriebssystem darstellen, geht beim DVD in H.264 encoden mit Handbrake aber mal echt ordentlich zu Werke…

Allerdings vernimmt das Ohr nach einigen Minuten mit dieser Load auch ein deutliches Lüfterrauschen. Normalerweise ist das MacBook Pro flüsterleise, aber das Encoding bringt dann doch einige Watt mehr an Wärmeleistung ins Gehäuse die abtransportiert werden wollen.

Top Gerät. Der versprochene Post zur Ersteinrichtung wird derzeit einem internen Lion-Update unterzogen, kommt aber sicher eines Tages ans Tageslicht…

Natürlich ist die ganze Sache schon nicht so einfach. Castor-Transporte, Endlagerung radioaktiver Abfälle, Netzgrundlast, internationale Abhängigkeiten von Firmen, die über das Thema Fußball weit hinaus gehen…

Alles sehr, sehr schwierige Themen die auf eine Lösung warten.

Allerdings sind diese Probleme null und nichtig, wenn es um den eigenen kleinen Ausstieg aus der Kernenergie geht. Die meisten Leute finden Kernkraftwerke halt nicht so toll und befeuern dennoch den eigenen Haushalt, zu einem unterschiedlichen Prozentsatz, mit Strom aus dem Meiler. Dabei ist es echt einfach, hier ein eigenes kleines Zeichen zu setzen und den privaten Ausstieg durchzuführen.

Mittlerweile gibt es sehr viele Angebote am Markt, die Mehrzahl der Kunden müsste vermutlich noch nicht einmal den Stromanbieter wechseln um an Strom ohne Atom zu kommen.

Der Wechsel hin zu grünem Strom geht ausserdem deutlich leichter von der Hand, als einen handelsüblichen Internetanschluss zu wechseln…

Daher fassen wir uns an die eigene Nase, fangen an und beziehen ab genau jetzt die bei unserem Stromanbieter Naturrhein-Strom genannte Ökostromgeschmacksrichtung. Die besteht nicht nur zu 0 % aus Kernenergie¹, sondern auch gleich zu 100 % aus Wasserkraft und lässt damit sämtliche CO₂ Emissionen hinter sich.

Guess what? Funktioniert ganz hervorragend, wir sitzen nicht im Dunkeln und die Mehrkosten belaufen sich bei unserem Verbrauch ² auf etwas mehr als einen Euro pro Monat. Das ist durchaus bezahlbar zu nennen.

Natürlich kann man von dieser Seite der Steckdose aus nicht nachvollziehen, aus welchem Kraftwerkstyp die durch die Leitung rutschenden Elektronen nun stammen, schon klar. Dennoch ist der Weg über das Portemonnaie eigentlich der einzige Weg für den Endverbraucher, wie er effektiv über seine Stromerzeugung abstimmen kann. Wann der Atomausstieg in Diesem Unseren Land™ auch kommen mag, es schadet sicher nicht, wenn jetzt schon möglichst viele Leute der Atomkraft ihre persönliche Absage erteilen.

Tut gut, kostet nicht viel und es meckert sich gleich viel leichter über eine der gefährlichsten Arten Energie zu erzeugen.
