Vor einem Dorf steht eine Wache am Tor, die Einwohner nur nach der richtigen Beantwortung einer Frage passieren lässt. Ein feindlicher Spion, der in das Dorf will, sitzt auf einem Baum und beobachtet das Tor:

Ein Bauer kommt. Die Wache sagt: “Acht”. Der Bauer antwortet: “Vier”. Er darf rein. Ein kleines Mädchen kommt. Die Wache: “Achtundzwanzig”. Das Mädchen: “Vierzehn”. Es darf rein. Ein Mönch kommt. Die Wache: “Sechzehn”. Der Mönch: “Acht”. Er darf rein.

“Soso,” denkt der Spion. “Der Code ist ja simpel”. Er geht zum Tor. Die Wache sagt: “Zwölf”. Der Spion: “Sechs” und wird verhaftet.
