Ich bin mittlerweile, let’s face it, sehr auf mein iPhone angewiesen. Es hat eine Vielzahl von Geräten und¹ Gegenständen abgelöst, die ich in der Prä-iPhone-Zeit sonst so den Tag über gebraucht habe. Darunter fallen so verschiedene Sachen wie MP3-Player und Einkaufszettel, Wecker und Fernsehzeitung, Straßenkarte und Kamera.

Der langen Rede kurzer Sinn: Das iPhone ist schon sehr, sehr praktisch.

Und dann, von einem Tag auf den anderen ist mein iPhone 3GS nicht mehr in der Lage, sich per UMTS in das Mobilfunknetz einzubuchen. Die Verbindung per Edge und auch das WLAN funktionieren zwar, aber da der Akku bereits nach vier Stunden Laufzeit komplett entleert ist, macht auch das nicht so richtig viel Spaß.

Erste Reaktion meinerseits²: Panik!

Die zweite Reaktion war dann das googlen der Symptome, aber da die UMTS-Funktion im angloamerikanischen Sprachgebrauch schlicht 3G genannt wird und der Vorgänger meines Modells ebenfalls 3G im Namen trägt, waren die Resultate alles andere als zufriedenstellend³.

Gut, also Service-Optionen bei Apple⁴ checken. Da sich mein iPhone weder innerhalb der gesetzlichen Gewährleistung befand, noch unter die Apple Care Garantie fiel, blieb eigentlich nur die Reparatur-Option von Apple⁵ für Geräte ausserhalb der Garantie. Diese Option verlangt ein Einsenden des defekten Geräts und kostet mal eben 210,90 € und hinterliesse mich für einen definitiv zu langen Zeitraum ohne ein iPhone.

Inakzeptabel.

Apple scheint aber an solche Bedenken gedacht zu haben und bietet an, ein Ersatzgerät zu schicken, bevor man sein iPhone abschickt. Das ist an eine ganze Menge Vorraussetzungen gekoppelt, unter anderem würde diese Möglichkeit meine Kreditkarte mit einem Pfandbetrag von 430,00 € belasten um eventuelle Ausfallrisiken für Apple abzudecken.

Schon irgendwie verständlich, aber alles andere als toll.

Glücklicherweise gibt es seit einiger Zeit einen richtigen Brick & Mortar AppleStore im CentrO Oberhausen und damit ganz in der Nähe. Ich reservierte mir über die Website des Stores einen Termin an der Genius Bar für den frühen Abend, tippte ein paar Zeilen zu meinem Problem und erhielt anschliessend eine Mail mit einer Reservierungsbestätigung.

Smooth sailing.

Als ich dann am Abend dem Genius, der meinen Namen aufrief, von meinem Problem berichtete, konnte ich mich des Eindrucks nicht erwehren, viel eher bei einem Psychologen auf einem Barhocker zu sitzen, als an der Service-Theke eines Elektronik-Herstellers…

Es wurde viel genickt, es wurde verständnisvoll gelächelt, mir wurden ruhige, präzise Fragen zu meinem bisherigen Vorgehen gestellt. Bevor das iPhone zu Diagnosezwecken mit einem unter der Bar hervorgezauberten MacBook Pro verbunden wurde, war es selbstverständlich, mir vorher zu erklären, dass man keine persönlichen Daten auslese und ich natürlich mit auf den Bildschirm schauen könnte. Vor dem Check der Seriennummer, vielleicht sei ja doch noch etwas über Apple Care zu machen, wurde ebenfalls meine Erlaubnis eingeholt.

Nach einer knappen Viertelstunde stellt der Genius dann anhand der Symptome und der ausgelesenen Diagnoseinformation fest, dass das UMTS-Modem in der Tat defekt sei. Anhand der Seriennummer war ersichtlich, dass mein Apple Care, leider, abgelaufen sei.

Sein Lösungsvorschlag war dann, mein iPhone über die Option zum Wechsel der Batterie, Kostenpunkt 79,00 €, vor Ort gegen ein neues, modellgleiches auszutauschen.

Ich war, wenig verwunderlich, einverstanden mit dieser Lösung, veranlasste gemeinsam mit dem Genius die komplette Rücksetzung des alten iPhones inklusive Löschung aller Inhalte⁶, aktivierte das neue iPhone noch vor Ort und war anschliessend ready to roll. Zu Hause war dann lediglich der ganze Content auf das neue Gerät zu syncen.

Das war eine wirklich beeindruckende Service Experience.

Ich meine, man stelle sich nur mal vor, man würde ein ähnliches Problem bei der Telekom oder einem handelsüblichen Elektromarkt abwickeln wollen. Der Vorgang würde sich vermutlich darauf reduzieren, meine Garantie/Gewährleistung zu checken. Dabei wäre dann festgestellt worden, dass beides nicht mehr gegeben sei und mit etwas Glück hätte man mir noch den Weg zu dem nun zu erwerbendem Neugerät gewiesen.

Apple macht hier doch einiges anders und vor allem, sowohl aus Kundensicht wie auch aus Firmensicht, total richtig.

Ich betrat den Laden schlechtgelaunt und mit einem defekten Gerät. Ich verliess den Laden nach einer kulanten Lösung des Problems mit einem neuen Gerät und ausreichend guter Laune, das ich mich hinsetzte um einen Blogpost über die Apple-Experience zu schreiben…

Erstaunlich, dass andere Unternehmen nichts von diesem Mechanismen ausnutzen können oder wollen. Ich kann mir kaum vorstellen, dass Unternehmen ihre Kundschaft mit Absicht verprellen, aber ich glaube auch, dass sich fast niemand so um die Kundschaft bemüht, wie eben Apple es tut. Das ist nicht nur mir aufgefallen, das scheint recht vielen Leuten so zu gehen…

Ist das ein Titel? Aber zur Sache:

Ist es nicht erstaunlich, wie sehr Geeks wie du und ich¹ sich Gedanken darüber machen, wie sich Computer und anderes technisches Gerät in den Wohnraum und damit das Leben² integrieren lassen?

Man nehme nur dieses neue MacBook Air. Oder dieses iPad. Je nachdem, was einem eben besser passt… Der ganze Sinn dieser Formfaktoren scheint ja darin zu bestehen, immer und überall dabei zu sein, respektive auf dem Couchtisch eine gute Figur zu machen. Aber der Hauptcomputer³ steht halt immer noch irgendwo rum. Selbst, wenn ein 13″ Air als Hauptcomputer dient⁴, ist so ein Arbeitsplatz mit großem Bildschirm, externer Tastatur und Maus Trackball Trackpad Zeigegerät doch durch nicht sehr viel zu ersetzen…

Daher mache ich mir, obwohl ich auf absehbare Zeit keinen Schreibtisch mehr zuhaus haben werde und eigentlich auch schon ein 15″ MacBook Pro als nächster Computer eingeplant ist, hin und wieder Gedanken, was man denn da so schickes einsetzen könnte um den Hauptcomputer schick im Wohnraum zu platzieren.

Studio Desk

Mir gefällt beispielsweise dieses Studio Desk total gut:

Der Hersteller verlangt zwar geschmeidige 600 $, aber schick ist der allemal und der Verzicht auf sichtbare Kabelführung ist sicher den ein oder anderen Euro wert… Der Hersteller, Bluelounge, verkauft auch allerlei anderen Orga-Kram der auch gut auf eher normale Schreibtische passt.

BookArc Stand Ebenfalls passend für so gut wie jeden Schreibtisch ist der BookArc Stand. Er bietet einem MacBook eine angemessene Ruhestätte während die Arbeit auf einem großen Bildschirm stattfindet. Für mich wäre das eher nichts, ich finde Multi-Monitor-Setups einfach zu praktisch…

Auch dieser Hersteller, Twelve South, hat noch so einige andere Design-Höhepunke im Angebot. Besonders für das iPad gibt es gelungene Lösungen für die Aufbewahrung und den Transport des schmucken Computers.

WallDock

Aber kommen wir mal lieber zu realistischen und trotzdem sehr praktischen Helfern. Mit dem Walldock kann man Steckdosen zu praktischen iPhone-Ladestationen umfunktionieren. Und in der Küche hat man gleichzeitig eine Möglichkeit, das Rezept des gerade herzustellenden Gerichts in einem angenehmen Lesewinkel vor sich zu haben.

So eine Ladestation wäre vor allem deshalb praktisch, weil wir an dem mini im Wohnzimmer⁵ nur ein Dock haben…

iMac mini Schreibtisch

Wir haben daheim vor wenigen Tagen Wochen⁶ unseren Esstisch um Wohnzimmer um 90° gedreht. Er steht nun nicht mehr mit der langen, sondern mit der schmalen Seite an der Wand. Auf diese Art und Weise haben wir Platz geschaffen, um ein Sideboard oder eine Vitrine oder ähnliches stellen zu können. Sollte das aber vielleicht doch nicht so schrecklich nötig sein,⁷ so könnte man ja einen sehr schmalen Schreibtisch aus Ikea-Standard Teilen bauen:

Nein, ergonomisch sieht das nicht gerade aus, und nein, vielleicht ist das auch nicht so richtig praktisch. Eventuell entpuppt sich das auch in Kombination mit einem 27″ iMac als nicht sonderlich stabil und dann fiele dieser iMac ja herunter…

Aber: Es sieht total super aus, ist gar nicht so teuer⁸ und allein weil es geht beschäftigt mich das sehr…
