Ich habe da ja vor kurzem mein MacBook Pro von Hand eingerichtet¹.

Da fiel mir auf, dass mein Dock erst nach folgenden Anpassungen richtig, nämlich so ausschaut:

Zuerst raus aus der dritten Dimension und zurück zu 2D und Rauchglas. Dazu im Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

Und das Dock dann per killall Dock neu starten.

Damit die Listenansicht der Ordner im Dock so aussieht:

Genügt eine weitere Zeile im Terminal²:

defaults write com.apple.dock use-new-list-stack -bool YES && killall Dock

Und für ein wenig Ordnung sorgen transparente Abstandshalter, die man per:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{ "tile-type" = "spacer-tile"; }'

erzeugt. Diese Zeile wiederholt man so häufig, wie man Trenner benötigt und startet das Dock dann wieder neu.

Das iPad. Das Internet ist voll von Posts und Tweets zu diesem am 27. Januar 2010 vorgestellten, neuesten Gerät aus dem Hause Apple. Heute ist dann auch noch die Pressesperre gefallen und die ersten echten Reviews¹ sind online. Einen guten Überblick dazu bietet das iPhone Blog.

Ich habe sowohl diese aktuellen Berichte, als auch eine geradezu ungesund hohe Zahl der vorherigen, gerüchtegeschwängerten und ins Blaue ratenden Posts von obskuren Fanboys, gelesen und bin mir immer noch nicht sicher, ob ich ein iPad will. Nein, das ist falsch, ich will definitiv eins, aber ich weiss nicht, ob ich eins brauche oder, noch besser, sinnvoll einsetzen kann…

Was völlig klar ist: Apple wird den goldenen Käfig, in dem schon das iPhone sitzt, nicht öffnen. Apple ist über den AppStore der zentrale Gatekeeper und bestimmt, was auf dem iPad geht und was nicht. Auf dem iPhone konnten User, trotz immer neuer Firmware-Versionen mit neuen Hürden, stets einen Jailbreak durchführen und so Software aus alternativen Quellen installieren. Ob es diesen Weg auf dem iPad auch geben wird, ist bisher noch nicht klar und so begeben sich die US-Vorbesteller am Samstag in die Apple Restriction Zone.

Auch hierzulande ist das Interesse an dem iPad enorm. Interessant fand ich vor allem die Reaktionen der non-Geeks, der Leute in meinem Freundeskreis, die eben nicht jede Keynote verfolgen und sich üblicherweise noch nicht mal sonderlich für IT-News interessieren. Ganz normale Leute sind von sich aus auf mich zu gekommen um mit mir² ein Gespräch über Apple Hardware zu führen. Die kleine Stichprobe der Nicht-Informatiker³ in meinem Bekanntenkreis zeigt, dass sich ansonsten völlig normale Menschen plötzlich sehr für ein Stück unveröffentlichte Hardware interessieren.

Warum nun wollten alle diese Stevenote-Verweigerer mit mir über das iPad reden?

Das iPad ging⁴ durch alle Medien. Twitter, Tageszeitungen, Fernsehen, das Teil ist in aller Munde. Ich vermute, Apple-Marketing hat hart daran gearbeitet oder und ein planetenweites Reality Distortion Field projiziert. Der Erfolg gibt ihnen auf jeden Fall Recht.

Standesgemäß beschäftigten sich die ernsthaften traditionellen Medien auch mit der wirtschaftlichen Seite des iPads und hier insbesondere mit den Auswirkungen auf den Markt der gedruckten Bücher. Die tatsächliche Markteinführung von eBooks scheint nach Amazon Kindle und Google Books mit dem iPad einen erneuten Schritt näher gerückt zu sein. Je nach Gusto kann man darin eine großartige neue Chance für mutige neue Inhalte, konzerngesteuerte Zensurpolitik chinesischen Ausmaßes⁵ oder den Untergang des Abendlandes sehen.

Das alles wird sich aber eh erst Ende April auf meine Kaufentscheidung auswirken können. Vorher ist das iPad hierzulande nämlich gar nicht erhältlich. Euro-Preise gibt es ebensowenig wie interessante Angebote deutscher Provider für das (optionale) UMTS-Modul des iPads. Einzig Simyo kündigte bisher eine MicroSIM und einen passenden Prepaid-Tarif⁶ an, T-Mobile lotet derweil per Umfrage aus, inwieweit sich Neu- und Bestandskunden für unterschiedliche Tarif-Modelle ausnehmen lassen erwärmen können.

Was also sind meine offenen Punkte?

• Die Tastatur muss rocken. Ich will auf dem Teil auch mal einen Blogeintrag oder eine längere Mail verfassen können ohne mir die Finger zu brechen. Hoffen lässt mich, dass Apple die iWork Suite auf das iPad portiert. Skeptisch macht mich das angebotene Keyboard-Dock.
• Jailbreak?
• Es muss eine iPad Remote-App für iTunes geben. Idealerweise sollte das iPad die lokal auf dem iPad vorhandene Musik per AirTunes streamen können und last.fm unterstützen.
• Wird es die Bilder aus iPhoto-Bibliotheken im Netzwerk anzeigen können?
• Wird es ein ansprechendes Bücherangebot in Deutschland geben? Wird es Spaß machen, Bücher auf dem iPad zu lesen?
• Sollte es ein UMTS-Modell werden möchte ich meinen existierenden Datentarif auch mit dem iPad nutzen können. Dem Provider sollte es egal sein, mit welchem Gerät ich mein Datenvolumen nutze.⁷

Auch wenn ich mich gegen die erste Inkarnation des iPad entscheiden⁸ sollte, so denke ich dennoch, dass das Gerät ein großer Erfolg für Apple wird.

Es ist das erste richtig durchdachte Tablet. Es ist weder ein großer iPod touch, noch ein Notebook ohne Tastatur und ein Netbook ist es auch nicht. Dennoch wird es vermutlich vor allem gegen letztere im Markt bestehen müssen. Es scheint mir der ideale Computer für wenig technikaffine Menschen zu sein⁹.

Es ist ganz offenbar ideal geeignet, Medien zu konsumieren. Ob es auch einfach möglich sein wird, eigenen Content zu erstellen und was das geschlossene Modell für die Zukunft der Programmierer bedeutet wird sich erst erweisen müssen.

Ich erwarte mit Spannung die Entwicklung der nächsten 30 Tage in den USA. In einem Monat wird man dann mehr über das tatsächliche Feature-Set und App-Angebot wissen und ausserdem sehen, zu welchen Konditionen das iPad in Europa gekauft und betrieben werden kann.

Damit Terminal.app den Fokus ohne ein Klicken bekommt, ist es ausreichend einfach die folgende Zeile abzusetzen und Terminal.app neu zu starten.

defaults write com.apple.terminal FocusFollowsMouse -string YES

Um zum Klick-Fokus zurückzukehren anstelle des YES ein NO einsetzen.
